Building on the Strengths of Euclid
For the past couple years, Downtown Cleveland Alliance and its neighborhood partners have been developing a retail strategy for Euclid Avenue. Very similar to the research done prior to the development of E.4th Street (one of Downtown's most successful entertainment districts), this retail strategy builds on the strengths of the entire region and focuses on the gaps that Downtown can fill in that regional retail environment. Our retail strategy for Euclid involves connecting several districts:
District of Design
The Cleveland Institute of Art (located in University Circle) was the first school in the country to create a Department of Industrial Design, founded in the 1930's. World-renowned designer Viktor Schreckengost founded the program and built it into one of the most successful ID programs in the US. In addition to the school, Northeast Ohio is home to over 40 successful consumer product marketers, manufacturers and design companies.
The goal of the District of Design is to be the focal point of the design community in Northeast Ohio. The core of the district, along the Euclid Corridor in PlayhouseSquare, will be comprised of street-level consumer product showrooms, highlighting the product offerings of regional consumer product companies for retail/wholesale buyers.
Home Furnishings District
Building off the District of Design strategy of creating a center of consumer product design/manufacturing companies along Euclid, the Home Furnishing District will create a concentration of street-level retail stores along Euclid that will feature home furnishing products and products produced through the District of Design.
Upscale Outlet
Traditionally, outlet shopping centers have been located far from urban centers. While this strategy has worked in the past, retailers are realizing that these locations don't provide the right mix of entertainment and infrastructure to keep shoppers for extended stays. Shoppers want a dynamic mix of shopping and entertainment; Downtown Cleveland's dynamic mix of entertainment, restaurants, hotels and retail space makes it a perfect location for this off-price retail strategy.
