PlayhouseSquare: Cleveland's
destination for live entertainment and so much more!
PlayhouseSquare is the nation’s largest performing arts
center outside of New York City and it is Cleveland’s home for the
best of Broadway, opera, dramatic theater, concerts, comedy, family shows,
dance programs and so much more.
Over 1000 performances a year grace the stages of this lively complex that began in the 1920’s as four Vaudeville and movie houses. When the theater were poised to be demolished in the 70’s, the community banded together to save them just moments from the wrecking ball. The opulent theaters were painstakingly restored to their original splendor, representing the world’s largest theater restoration of its kind. Years later, the area boasts eight performing spaces in total and a $27 million arts education center which is shared with the broadcast home PBS WVIZ/NPR WCPN ideastream. And there is more to come.
The live entertainment is at the core of PlayhouseSquare,
but thanks to the organization’s conscientious area development mission, the
neighborhood features an outdoor stage and communal area, restaurants, bars, hotel,
housing, a technology hub and a thriving daily business community.
